India to celebrate the '1857 Uprising' for the first time

Shillong, May 5 (UNI) India will celebrate for the first time the 150th year of the First War of Indian Independence with a National Youth Rally from May 6 to 11 to commemorate the Uprising of 1857.

Freedom fighters, who sacrified their lives fighting against British Imperialism before and after 1857, will be remembered in the rally, to be organised between Meerut and Delhi on the occasion.

Nehru Yuva Kendra, Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills, yesterday organised a rally entitled 'Jung-e-Azadi' at Nongkhlaw near Mairang for the collection of the ashes of the Indian Freedom Fighters to be displayed at Red Fort, New Delhi during the commemorative ceremony of the Uprising.

The programme was held at U Tirot Sing Syiem Durbar Hall, where the collection of ashes in the Urn was done by the Syiem of Hima Nongkhlaw.

The function was presided over by Mr P B Lyngdoh Nongum, Myntri of Hima Nongkhlaw.
