Highway closed after tanker overturns in Anand

Anand, May 5 (UNI) National highway No 8 (Ahmedabad-Mumbai) at Ravalapura Patia, 5 km from here, has been closed after a tanker, carrying 18 tons of gas overturned.

The tanker overturned at around 2330 hrs last night after it hit a tree, forcing authorities to block the highway since 0100 hrs today. The traffic has been diverted from Samarsa chowkdi, sources said.

Fire brigade officials, who reached the spot along with the police, emptied 14 tons of gas into the air after the tanker began leaking gas.

Cold storage plants near the accident site were closed as a precautionary measure and police have asked people living in the vicinity of 500 mts not to light any fire.

Fire brigade sources said the road may the opened for traffic by 1400 hrs today.
