Centre urged to amend Constitution to provide extra powers to Pondy

Puducherry, May 5 (UNI) The Puducherry Legislative Assembly today unanimously adopted a government resolution urging the Centre to amend the Constitution and the Union Territory Act to provide more powers to the Legislature and Cabinet so as to function on par with other state governments.

Private member resolutions urging the Centre to grant more powers and special category state status for the Union Territory tabled by member R Viswanathan (CPI), R K R Anantharaman (PMK), A Anbazhagan (AIADMK) and S P Sivakumar (DMK) were rephrased, converted into a government resolution and unanimously adopted.

Moving it as a government resolution Chief Minister N Rangasamy said implementation of several welfare works were being delayed due to lack of adequate powers to the Cabinet and the resolution should be unanimously adopted to ensure that the demand put forth would be fulfilled in a couple of months.
