Guwahati, May 05 (UNI) The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) today castigated the state government for failing to implement the new academic calendar properly.

Addressing a press meet here, AASU advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya said, the new calendar was to be implemented from January first this year.

Taking a dig at the government, he said the government could not even prepare the academic calendar. Even after having a ready-made calendar, prepared by the AASU, it had failed to implement.

Reiterating the AASU's demand for Rs 100 crore packages each for Gauhati and Dibrugarh Universities, the students' leader said, '' The government has not responded to our demand. It high time the varsities get the financial assistance.'' Alleging that the scenario in government schools and colleges was far from good, he said, ''Even the oldest college in the North East region, Cotton College, and has 21 faculty positions lying vacant.

Dr Bhattacharyya demanded that the education department take immediate concrete steps for improving the scene in the state.
