Chennai, May 4 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K Ponmudi today announced Centralised counselling for admissions to professional colleges in the State.

Replying to a debate on the demand for grants for his department in the Assembly, he said this year counselling would be held only in Anna University in the city.

''To avoid confusion among students, counselling for all professional courses will be held in Chennai. Last year, counselling was held in Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli and Madurai,'' he added.

Referring to the abolition of Common Entrance Test (CET) for professional courses, Mr Ponmudi said the normalisation of marks scored in different streams of education would not affect the merit list in a big way. The merit list would be prepared by the Anna University.

Stating that there would not be any confusion in the admission process in the wake of CET abolition, he said students would be admitted based on their Plus-Two marks only. First preference would be given to students based on their overall marks in Plus Two exams.

This would be followed by individual marks scored by students in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. If more than one student had equal marks in Maths, then the marks of Physics would be considered.

If the students stood on par even then, their date of birth would be taken into consideration, he explained.

The Minister announced that the counselling fees would be reduced from Rs 300 to Rs 200 for each student.
