SC holds rampant corruption responsible for current mess
New Delhi, May 4 (UNI) The Supreme Court today again held rampant corruption in the country responsible for the current mess and said judges are also accountable to the people.
The remarks were made by Justice Markandey Katju during the hearing of a bail application in a corruption case.
The judge also said," see what is happening in the municipal corporations all over the country where nothing moves without bribe and no map or building plan can be got approved without greasing the palms of the employees and officers." Justice Katju, the only judge in the apex court who does not hesitate in talking in Hindi in the court, was also annoyed with open loot going on in the country and said every day there is new scam in the newspapers.
The bench comprising Justices S B Sinha and Markandey Katju while refusing to entertain the petition filed by Diwakar Parsad Sinha, an accountant facing allegations of signing bogus bills, directed the trial court to decide his bail application on merits after he surrenders before the trial court and applies for regular bail.
Justice Katju had earlier remarked that those involved in corruption cases should be hanged from the lamp posts but the law does not permit the courts to do so.
The judge went on to declare that judges were accountable to the public and were also servants of the people and judiciary is facing flak for delay in disposal of cases because of the people like the present petitioner when corruption cases go on for 20 long years in the courts.
