Rajya Sabha Saturday sitting cancelled

New Delhi, May 4 (UNI) The Rajya Sabha will not sit on Saturday as announced earlier, Deputy Chairman K Rehman Khan informed today.

Mr Khan did not assign any reason for the cancellation of the extended sitting tomorrow.

However, Secretariat sources said this had been done because the Finance Bill, 2007, which was to be taken up for discussions and return tomorrow, would be taken up this afternoon itself.

''The Rajya Sabha would also return after discussions The Appropriation (No.2) Bill, 2007 today, leading to the cancellation of Saturday's sitting,'' the sources pointed out.

Effectively, there would be little business to transact in the Upper House in the extended sitting tomorrow.

The sources also pointed out that the changed schedule would provide two consecutive days to Members of Parliament to visit Uttar Pradesh, where the assembly elections are under way.

Earlier, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi had announced that the Rajya Sabha would sit on Saturday (May 5) because of three consecutive holidays for the Upper House this week (April 30, May 1 and 2).
