Kochi, May 4 (UNI) Communist Marxist Party (CMP) Leader M V Raghavan today demanded Kerala Health Minister P K Sreemathi own moral responsibility and resign following the death of at least 38 new born babies caused by an infection at the SAT Hospital in Thiruvanathapuram.

Speaking to reporters here, Mr Raghavan said tragic incidents like these marred the high standards set by the state in health and education.

'' The health minister should own moral responsibility for the deaths at the hospital and resign,'' he demanded.

Incidently, a local court yesterday directed the police to file a case amounting to culpable homicide against seven persons, including Ms Sreemathi, for failing to take steps to prevent the deaths, caused by an alleged hospital acquired infection.

On allegations that funds in the cooperative sector were misappropriated, the former cooperation minister urged the government to order a probe into the matter.

He also added the present LDF Government in the state had no moral right to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first undivided Communist government headed by Mr E M S Namboothiripad in 1957.
