Free bus pass for Govt arts, science college students

Chennai, May 4 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government today announced extension of free bus passes to students of Government arts and science colleges and polytechnics from the coming academic year, Higher Education Minister K Ponmudi told the State Assembly today.

Replying to a debate on the demand for grants for his department, he said hitherto the Government arts and science college and polytechnic students were given 50 per cent concession.

Considering their long pending demand, the Government, which was providing free bus passes to students up to Plus two level, had decided to allow the extension.

This would benefit about one lakh arts and science students and 15,309 polytechnic students, most of whom hail from poor families, he added.
