Kolkata, May 4 (UNI) Kolkata has become the fourth metropolis after Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai to have an American Embassy School(AES) for the children of diplomatic and international business families.

Announcing this here today, US Consul General in Kolkata Henry V Jardine said the school, named American School Kolkata (ASK) had received approval from the External Affairs Ministry and was scheduled to open on August 6.

Mr Jardine said ASK would address a critical niche for Kolkata and the country's eastern region in providing a US-based curriculum to respond to the need of the expatriate families, required to travel frequently from country to country.

''The curriculum will facilitate an easier transition for students moving from one American international school to another or returning to the Unites States,'' he said.

While observing that setting up of AES schools was the proof of success of Indian economy, the Consul General said ASK's presence should help bring a higher profile to Kolkata for the international community.

Initially, the school will be small catering to early elementary classes and will be located on the grounds of the US Consulate General, Kolkata. If the demand warrants, the school will become an independent entity and acquire its own facility.
