21 degree colleges being constructed at Rs 105 crore: CM

Shimla, May 4 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh today said Rs 105 crore are being spent on constructing 21 degree colleges, which will be equipped with latest facilities.

Addressing a public meeting at Rajgarh in Sirmaur district, he said a sum of Rs five crore have been earmarked for each new degree college being set up in the state.

Observing that a record number of degree colleges were opened in the states during the last few years, Mr Singh said in all 70 colleges were functioning in government sector alone besides other colleges in private sector.

He said majority of the colleges were opened in the rural areas to provide education to the wards of the villagers near their homes.

Reiterating his government's resolve to open a degree college in every assembly constituency, he said colleges at Rajgarh, Sangarh and Shillai have been made functional, while construction of college buildings have been initiated.

The Chief Minister said private sector participation in education sector was being encouraged to set up centers of excellence for imparting education in information and Technology (IT), bio-technology (BT), engineering and other new courses.

State Vidhan Sabha Speaker G R Musafir was also present on the occasion.
