Vidarbha receives welcome rains

Nagpur, May 3 (UNI) Unexpected showers dropped the temperature in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, bringing relief from the oppressive heat.

Nagpur, Washim, Gondia, Wardha and Yavatmal districts received rains accompanied by strong winds last evening. The winds uprooted trees and swept away roofs of houses at several places.

A tower of the telecommunication department collapsed because of the winds in Yavatmal district.

The mercury fell yesterday after hovering around the 45 degrees Celsius mark for the past week. Akola recorded a maximum temperature of 45.8 degrees, Nagpur 43.4, Wardha 37.8, Bramhapuri (district Chandrapur) 42.7 and Chandrapur 43.6 degrees, the local met office said.

According to the met department, the rainfall was occurring due to low-level cyclonic circulation and was likely to recur over the next few days. Nagpur recorded a rainfall of 5.2 mm and Chandrapur 1 mm till 0830 hrs today, the met office added.
