New Delhi, May 3 (UNI) As television channels vie for higher TRPs and more advertisements, experts today expressed concern that this could lead to a degeneration in the standards of journalism.

Participating in a discussion, well-known TV personality and columnist Saeed Naqvi said,''The TV news channels are going out of their way to get advertisements and high TRPs and are giving hype to such things that cannot even be called 'news'. This will lead to fall in journalistic ethos.'' The discussion was on "Freedom of the Press-- Relevance and Implications in the Globlized Media", organised at the American Center here.

Dr Naqvi said at present when there were hundreds of newspapers, channels and other internet sites providing news, the success of a journalist depends only on the credibility of his report.

''He must go for balanced reporting otherwise the news would become one sided and less effective,'' Naqvi said.

Speaking on the occasion, Peter Wonacott, senior correspondent of The Wall Street Journal, stressed that despite different pressures, the press must act in an impartial manner.

Expressing concern that journalists were being pressurised and even being attacked by different groups, he said the media should be given maximum freedom as it was considered the fourth pillar of the democracy.

''Don't afraid of your job. Pursue it bravely as you can because the credibility of your organisation depends on your news reports," Mr Wonacott told the journalists present.

A film on early days of broadcast journalism in the US, titled,"Goodnight, And Good Luck" was also screened at the function.
