Rohtang Pass to open for vehicular traffic from May 10

Shimla, May 3 (UNI) The 13,050-foot-high Rohtang Pass will be thrown open for vehicular traffic on May 10 after clearing snow on the Manali-Leh Highway, BRO head for the state and Uttarakhand Brigadier Krishan Pratap Singh today said.

''Access to the landlocked snow bound Lahaul valley of the state will be permitted from May 10, after Border Roads Organisation (BRO) cuts through the major glaciers on the way to Rohtang Pass,'' he said at a press conference here.

Brig Singh said repair work was going on the high altitude road and emergency supplies of gas, food grains and other essential commodities would, however, be allowed from May five.

For tourism and other general purposes the Pass would become operational by May 10, he said.

He said in peak season, more than 5,000 people daily go up and down the road to the Pass, which is closed down by end of October each year due to heavy season.
