Hottest night in Kashmir, day temperature near normal

Srinagar, May 3 (UNI) It was the hottest night of this season so far in the Kashmir valley with the minimum temprature recorded at 15.2 degrees Celsius, weather office said here today.

However, people of the Kashmir valley had some relief from the heat after the maximum fell to 23.9 degrees about two degrees above normal.

Director meteorological office told UNI here that the minimum temperature was recorded at 15.2 degrees, about 6 degrees above normal. The night was hot because of clouds and thunder showers.

It was the hottest night so far of this season, he said, adding that minimum temperature almost remained above normal during the month of May.

He said the day temperature was recorded 23.9 degrees which again was two degrees above normal, though it was better as compared to past one week when temperature went up to 29.5 degrees hottest of the season so far on April 30.

The highest temperature recorded in Kashmir during the month of April was on April 20, 1946 when the mercury rose to 31.1 degrees, the weather office said.

On April 30, 1999, the maximum temperature was recorded at 30.2 degrees while it stood at 28.7 degrees on April 28, 1993, it added.

The highest ever temperature recorded in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during the past 80 years was on June 29, 1978 when the mercury had gone up to 37.8 degree Celsius.

The director said there was 0.6 mm rainfall in Pahalgam in south Kashmir. However, Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway recorded 29.2mm rainfall during the past 24 hours.
