Himalayan trekking expedition to get underway tomorrow

Tiruchirapalli, May 3: With a mission to spread the love for nature, instil interest in adventure activities and promoting popular science, a 46-member team from the Science and Adventure Club here will leave the city tomorrow for a 14-day Himalayan trekking expedition.

Talking to the media today, Club Founder-President J Ramanan said this was the seventh expedition of the club, the only registered club of its kind in Tamil Nadu affiliated to the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi.

He said the team members, including 12 girls in the age group of eight to 15, hail from the United States, Mumbai, Puducherry, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Tiruchirapalli. The youngest among them was eight-year-old Coimbatore lad V Roshan Srinivas, for whom it would be the third consecutive expedition.

Giving details about the expedition, Mr Ramanan said the team would trek Gomukh-Gangotri Glacier and establish a base camp at Tapovan (15,000 ft) and Nandavan (15,500 ft) at the foot of Bhagirathi Peaks. The team would also attempt to trek the Baby Shivling Peak (about 18,600 ft), prior to camping at Suralaya Bhamak (17,500 ft) at the foot of Kalindhi Pass.

The team members were selected based on their physical fitness and were given intensive training in ground exercises, trekking, rock climbing and rappelling, he said.

Earlier, City Corporation Mayor Sarubala Thondaiman felicitated the team members.
