CPM Maharashtra demands implementation of Sachar report

Mumbai, May 3 (UNI) The Sachar Committee report should be implemented at the earliest by the Union Government to integrate the alienated Muslim community into the mainstream, Mohammed Yusuf Tarigami, member of the legislative assembly of Jammu and Kashmir, demanded here today.

Speaking at the Communist Party (Marxist) Maharashtra convention, Tarigami said Muslims in the country should stand shoulder to shoulder to defeat the communal designs of the Sangh parivar.

He said for the last 60 years successive governments have failed to integrate the Muslim community into the development of the country. 'Hunger, unemployment and illiteracy has no religion'', reminded Tarigami.

He emphasised that the Sachar committee report, now tabled in Parliament, has to be implemented in full to check the alienation of Muslims in the country.

Maharashtra, CPM Secretary, Ashok Dhawale said that 25 years ago, Dr Gopal Singh committee had submitted a similar report outlining the conditions of Muslims in India as a worst case scenario.

Successive governments turned a blind eye to the Dr Gopal Singh report, aggravating the conditions of Muslims in the country and making them victims of vote bank politics and communal hatred, he said.

The Sachar committee report says conditions of Muslims in the country was worse than certain sections of dalits and other OBC castes. Banks shy away from giving them loans, even if loans are extended it will be half the amount sought by the borrower, said Dhawale.

Justice Sachhar and members of the committee travelled across the country for one and a half years to file the report. The report reveals the stark truth that only 4.9 per cent of Muslims are in Government sectors (Grade four), 3.2 per cent in Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and only 4.5 per cent is a part of the large railway sector, he said.

Dhawale said the CPM will see to it that the Sachhar committee report is implemented in total.
