Court awards RI to smuggler

Patna, May 3 (UNI) Special judge for economic offences at Patna Shahid Khan today awarded three years' rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,000 to a person for smuggling Chinese silk yarn.

The convict, who is a resident of Kolkata, was arrested along with the illegal consignment, under Didarganj police station area on NH-30 by the custom sleuths on May 2, 1999, sources here said.

The convict was transporting 256 kg Chinese silk yarn worth Rs 3,84,000 without custom clearance.

Two other accused - Prashank Kumar of Kolkata and Suraj Kumar Choubey of Bhadauli district, UP, had been declared absconder in the case.
