Only united effort can tackle terrorism: Shashi Tharoor

Thiruvananthapuram, May 2 (UNI) Former United Nations Under Secretary General Shashi Tharoor today stressed the need for a united effort by the nations to tackle terrorism, a major challenge faced by the world.

Delivering a talk on ''Globalisation, Terrorism and Human Imagination'', organised by the 'Mathrubhumi' daily here, he said terrorism does not originate in one country, its practitioners were not based in one country and its victims were not in one country.

Hence, it should be tackled by all countries.

Stating that terrorism was the product of three factors like fear, rage and incomprehension, he said these three elements fused together in igniting the deadly combustion that killed and destroyed people.

''If terrorism is to be tackled, we will have to deal with each of these three factors by attacking the ignorance that sustains them,'' he added.

On his defeat in the UN Secretary General election, he said his remarks that he would be an independent Secretary General might be the reason for his defeat.

To another question, he said the doors for his ''political debut'' were not closed.
