Only eligible persons can use red lights: CM

Puducherry, May 2 (UNI) Only eligible persons, as per the guidelines of the Centre, would be permitted to use the red lights on their cars, Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy told the legislative Assembly today.

Replying to a question, Mr Rangasamy said the administration had provided vehicles to the Chairpersons of Puducherry, Karaikal and Yanam Municipalities and added that due respect was being given to them.

He said allowances, as announced on the floor of the House, were provided to them.

AIADMK member A Anbazhagan brought to the notice of the House that Vilianur commune Panchayat President was using a red light atop his car and wondered whether the government would initiate action against him.

He said not only the Panchayat President but also some officals not eligible to use the red light were using it.

This prompted the Chief Minister to announce that only those eligible would be permitted to use the red light.

To another question the Chief Minister said the administration would consider to introduce a compulsory insurance scheme for students following the death of several students due to accident, including engineering college students. The government needed to study the financial implications before taking a final decision, he added.
