New Delhi, May 2 (UNI) The Delhi High Court today said the government hospital authorities would be taken to task for misusing the ambulances.

A Division Bench of Justices, T S Thakur and S N Agrawal said, ''No ambulance of any of the hospitals of both state and central governments would be used by the medical staff for their private use.'' Any misuse of ambulances of the government hospitals would be viewed seriously, the court said.

While disposing of the public suit, the bench said all the vehicles fitted with medical equipment and registered with the transport authorities as ambulance would be used only to carry patients for medical treatment.

The Court asked the petitioner and Counsel Varun Goswami to keep a watch on the implementation of the directives of the court.

''If the order is not implemented, come back to us,'' said the court to the petitioner.

The Centralised Accident and Trauma Services (CATS) submitted that it would be having 400 ambulances by the end of 2008.

Court directed the CATS, a Delhi Government Unit, to at least purchase 30 more ambulances immediately as about five people were dying every day in road accidents in Delhi.

The Court had also asked the authorities to state the reasons for non-availability of sufficient number of ambulances in the hospitals and Centralised Accident and Trauma Services (CATS).

Mr Goswami submitted before the court that due to non-availability of government ambulances, the people were hiring private ambulances at a higher price.
