Kerala launches 'child census'

Thiruvananthapuram, May 2 (UNI) Kerala today launched a unique census of children to prepare a databank for assessing their needs and ascertain their status.

The data collected would be digitised and each child would be given an identification number to track their educational progress up to the age of 18, Education Minister M A Baby said, launching the three-day census operation.

About 132,000 enumerators would visit 8.2 million families in the state to collect the data which would be used for planning. The survey was being undertaken by the state departments of local administration, social welfare and education.

The survey aimed at improving the quality of education and the details of every child would be available at the click of the mouse.

The Kerala Information Mission will provide technological support for the survey.
