Mumbai, May 1 (UNI) After the mobile revolution, Wi-Max could be the next big leap in the communication map of India with Reliance communications Ltd (RCL) all set to enter the nascent market of wireless telephony through Wi-Max.

'' We are ready for the nationwide rollout of Wi-Max technology as soon as the government announces its policy'', RCL Chairman Anil Ambani told UNI.

Among the emerging technologies, Ambani termed Wi-Max as the most viable option in the service providers kitty to solve the remote connectivity across the country.

'' We are deeply committed to reach the deeper pockets of the country and to provide data and voice services to the masses with wider range of accessibility,'' Mr Ambani said.

He openly supported Wi-Max over 3G network for enriching the rural connectivity. On trial basis, the company has also set up a broadband-facilitated- data center at a high altitude of Kedarnath in Uttarakhand.

For a nationwide Wi-Max network, RCL is planning to increase its infrastructure base from exsisting 13,000 towers to 33,000 by year-end.

Under the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), every private cellular operator in the country has to invest at least 10 per cent of their revenue on establishing viable communication facilities in rural areas.

Telecom analysts have dubbed Wi-Max as the next mile' solution for solving the rural or remote connectivity. Wi-max has been tipped as replacing the fibre optics connectivity. In rural areas, laying wired solution could be costly affair whereas Wi-Max strength solely lay on providing wire-free communication facility.

Wi-MAX is a standard-based wireless technology that provides high-throughput broadband connections over long distances. An implementation of the IEEE 802.16 standard, Wi-MAX (Worldwide Interoperability of Microwave Access) provides metropolitan area network (MAN) connectivity at speeds of up to 75 megabits per second (Mbps) per base station, with typical cell sizes of 2 to 10 kilometers.

Wi-Max offers the scalability to deliver affordable broadband access across India. Because its wireless infrastructure can be extended to provide portable and mobile device support in the future, the technology has additional advantages for developing economies such as that of India, that don't have widespread broadband infrastructure already in place.
