Kolhapur, May 1 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has assured that his government will take necessary steps for modernisation of the Chitranagari (film city), which is situated here.

Addressing the audience gathered at the 44th State Marathi Film awards distribution function held at Chhatrapati Shivaji stadium here last night, Mr Deshmukh said his government would take positive steps for the film city's modernisation as the citizens had been demanding it for long time.

Earlier, he presented 'Chitrapatee V Shantaram and Raj Kapoor' awards to well known Marathi film director Raj Dutt and Hindi filmmaker and producer Yash Chopra.

Kiran Shantaram, son of film-maker late V Shantaram, said he wanted to set up a memorial of his father in the city and the Chief Minister promised that his government would extend all necessary help, for the same.

Speaking on the occasion, Raj Dutt said he was honoured by receiving the award instituted in the name of V Shantaram in Kolhapur, which was supposed to be the legendary filmmaker's work land.

Yash Chopra attributed his success to Maharashtra, saying whatever he is now it is because of the state where he presently resides and works, though his birthplace is in Punjab.

He had received many awards but nowhere he had experienced such a huge crowd as it was present on the occasion, the veteran filmmaker added.
