Nagpur, May 1 (UNI) A trial court has awarded the life term to a murder accused in Buldhana district.

Additional district and sessions judge A K Tantrapale yesterday sentenced Shrikrishna Govind Baghe to life imprisonment for the murder of Parvat Girhe over a land dispute in village Asla Naik in Buldhana district in June 2006.

According to the prosecution, Baghe hit Girhe on the head with an axe, killing him on the spot, during a quarrel over the ownership of a field in the village. Girhe's wife Gangubai claimed that the field belonged to her mother, while Baghe's wife Tulsabai claimed she had bought the land.

A quarrel broke out over the ownership between Gangubai and Tulsabai when the former was supervising sowing operations in the field. The quarrel soon turned into fisticuffs between the two groups. The men with Tulsabai, including her husband, assaulted Gangubai, her husband and the others with sticks, the prosecution said. It was during the skirmish that Baghe hit Girhe with an axe.

After examining 13 witnesses and the evidence, the court held Baghe guilty and awarded life imprisonment.
