Guwahati, May 1 (UNI) The excitement was palpable, as it was a rare occasion for the 27-odd inmates of this unkempt orphanage.

The Dagaon Anath Ashram in North West Jorhat in upper Asom was packed with neighbours since Friday. Everyone seemed to chip in with their bits to help out 18-year-old Nipamoni get ready for her marriage. And, after she went away with her bridegroom on April 29, a melancholy set in the orphanage, as in every house after a daughter is wedded.

Nipamoni hails from a poor family of Golaghat district. Her parents abandoned her after they divorced. She had been staying in the orphanage since she was three.

But yesterday, as she dressed in her bridal costumes, the cheer in her face seemed to overshadow the agony of being an orphan.

Nipamoni's marriage was fixed just six days back.

Her bridegroom, Krishna Kalita hails from a poor family in the Tarajan area of the same town. Krishna feels sacred to marry a girl from an orphanage.

This is the third marriage in the orphanage.

In 2005, another orphan, Monoshree Dutta, tied the nuptial knot from this orphanage. Her wedding expenses were borne by a Jorhat-based businessman.

But, Nipamoni's marriage was organised with the help of the neighbours, and some assistance from her would-be-in law's family.

There were more than a hundred guests, all neighbours, who witnessed the marriage, which was performed abiding all necessary rituals, though in a subdued manner.

The caretakers of the orphanage, Nilu Sarma, Nirala Barua and Rupali Bora, were elated after the successful conclusion of the wedding. They, however, rued lack of support from the government in running the orphanage.

The orphanage is being run through donations.
