Asst Director Textile sentenced to 2 years jail

Bhubaneswar, May 1(UNI) An Assistant Director of Textile was convicted for abusing his official power and sentenced to two-year jail by Berhampur Special Judge (Vigilance) yesterday.

Vigilance sources said Prakash Chandra Swain,posted as Assistant Director Textile in Bhawanipatna, was facing trial under Prevention of Corruption Act for showing undue official favour by abusing his position.

The officer had diverted an amount of Rs 4,76,800 out of Rs 6 lakh central aid sanctioned in favour of Sinapali Weaver's Co-operative Society to Nehru Nagar Weavers Co-operative Society for implementation of Hank Yarn Price Subsidy Scheme.

On investigation it was found that the officer had allowed subsidy of Rs 14,500 illegally in violation of orders of the Government.

Berhampur Special Judge(Vigilance) held the accused guilty and sentenced him to 2 year rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000. However, in default of payment of the fine, he would further serve the imprisonment of 3 months.
