Agitating inmates surrender at MP jail
Shahdol, MP, May 1 (UNI) The situation is under control at the District Jail where inmates surrendered LPG cylinders used by them to take control of the main gate and threaten to blow up the prison after a dispute.
''Inmate Narendra Shukla yesterday assaulted Constable Dinesh Singh who had to be admitted to the District Hospital. Later, inmates bolted the gate from within, placed the cylinders and took three constables hostage,'' said Superintendent of Police L C Bharatiya.
After negotiation by the district administration and police, the main gate was opened late last night and ten cylinders surrendered to jail authorities but another group led by Naresh Kol still controlled a couple of rooms and two cylinders. The group was complaining about the prison's food quality, inadequate medicare, assault of visiting relatives and bribery.
Further negotiation followed and Kol surrendered this afternoon.
A search of the jail led to seizing of 11 cellphones, ten lathis and three sacks of empty liquor bottles. Unconfirmed reports said that bringing of liquor lay at the root of yesterday's dispute.
