Police officer convicted, dismissed for accepting bribe

Bhubaneswar, Apr 30 (UNI) A police Sub-Inspector was convicted and dismissed from service on charges of demanding and accepting illegal gratification.

Vigilance sources said Sub-Inspector Purna Chandra Naik, former Officer-in-charge of Puttasingh Police station in Rayagada had accepted Rs 3000 from a person for not implicating some villagers in a criminal case and forward them to the court.

On completion of trial in the case, Special Judge Vigilance, Berhampur, held the accused Sub-Inspector guilty of the charge and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for one year and a fine of Rs 1000 was also slapped. In default to payment of fine, he has to go further imprisonment of three months.

The Police officer was also convicted under Section 7 Prevention of Corruption Act and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for two years and was fined for Rs 2000, in default to payment of fine, further imprisonment of six months was ordered by the court. Mr Nayak was also dismissed from the office this month after being convicted by the court.
