Johny Joseph appointed new Chief Secretary
Mumbai, Apr 30 (UNI) Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Johny Joseph was today appointed as the new Chief Secretary of Maharashtra.
He succeeds Dr D K Shankaran who retires tomorrow, official sources said.
Mr Joseph belongs to the 1972 batch of Indian Administrative Service (IAS). Born in 1949, he holds BSc and Mechanical Engineering degrees.
Prior to heading Mumbai's civic administration, Mr Joseph was Principal Secretary (Chief Minister's office). He was also in charge of the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Latur's earthquake ravaged areas. He also served as Principal Secretary (Revenue).
Mr Joseph was at the helm of Mumbai's civic administration when the worst deluge struck the metropolis in July 2005, in which over 400 people lost their lives. He was credited with having brought the metropolis back on track in a day's time after the disaster.
