Deoria incident being probed: Gopalaswami

Gorakhpur, Apr 30 (UNI) Chief Election Commissioner (CEO) N Gopalaswami today said a magisterial inquiry was underway in the April 28 attack on Congress workers at Deoria district.

''A magisterial probe is being conducted and its report is expected by this evening,'' Mr Gopalaswami said while talking to reporters here after reviewing the poll preparation in the districts going under poll in the seventh and last phase of UP election.

''Stringent action would be taken against the accused in the Deoria incident on the basis of report,'' he assured.

Congress workers were found violating the model code of conduct, while campaigning for the 'Rahul Sandesh Yatra' in Sadar area of Deoria on Saturday. The Yatra was being led by Youth Congress president Ashok Tanwar.

When police seized their vehicle, the Congress workers got furious and staged a protest at the police station. Later, the police 'lathi-charged' them, in which many party workers got injured.

Yesterday, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi had visited Deoria and met the victims. He had assured that the EC would be informed of the episode.
