Bangalore, Apr 29 (UNI) Former National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Justice M N Venkatachalaiah today said the non-governmental organisations (NGO) have a vital role in defending the human rights and legal support should be extended for their efficient functioning.

Speaking at the valedictory function of the Conference on the 'Role of NGOs in support of NHRC' here he said the Commission could set up a cell for better coordination with NGOs in their efforts to popularise the human rights movement in the country.

Stating that the NGOs should observe the moral code of conduct in approaching the cases of violation of human rights, he said the Commission should think of introducing an accreditation system for the NGOs for the cause they fight for.

In turn, the NGOs help in setting up of better norms in protecting and promoting human rights, Mr Venkatachalaiah said.

Human rights were the core of every society and without it no civilisation could survive, he said.
