Two held for smuggling auto components

Chennai, Apr 29 (UNI) Airport police has arrested two persons, including a Sri Lankan, from Anna International Airport here yesterday for attempting to smuggle automobile components to Sri Lanka without customs clearance.

Police today said one Samsudheen, 50, who is running an automobile spare parts shop at Colombo, had purchased the components from the city and Namakkal and came to the airport along with his Indian friend Sankaran, 28 from Namakkal, to catch a flight to Colombo. The duo handed over their suitcases to the Jet airways authorities for scanning.

After scanning, the duo while taking the suitcases for security check opened the suitcases and loaded few bundles kept in their hand bags in to the suitcases.

The Jet Airways staff, who noticed this, informed the matter to the police.

Police secured them and further interrogation revealed that the duo added the bundles into suitcases to evade customs duty.

Both were arrested and later remanded to judicial custody, police added.
