Thousands witness Wedding of Meenakshi-Sundareswarar

Madurai, Apr 29 (UNI) Thousands of devotees thronged the temple city to witness the annual celestial wedding of goddess Meenakshi with Lord Sundareswarar, today.

Amidst the chanting of vedic mantras, the divine marriage was performed at the auspicious time this morning on the specially decorated dais in the Aadi street adjoining the temple. Flowers from Bangalore, Ooty and elsewhere from the state were brought for the floral decorations of the event.

The four maasi streets wore a festive look with the faithful flocking the temple to have a glimpse of the annual ritual, held on the ninth day of the Chithirai festival. The famous car procession would be held tomorrow.

The temple administration had organised a mega marriage feast with a sumtuous meal, including traditional sweets and delicacies for 75,000 people.

Like the usual wedding, devotees made cash gifts, called 'Moi' in Tamil, to the divine couple.

The crowning event of the Chithirai festival, the entry of Lord Kallazhagar of Azhagarkoil, is slated for May two and nearly ten lakh people are expected to congregate for the event.
