Speaker calls for people's intervention to oust corrupt politicians
Bangalore, Apr 29 (UNI) Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today said that 'Right to Recall' was the best way to put an end to increasing cases corruption committed by the peoples' representatives.
Speaking after addressing students at the 125th Graduation Ceremony of St. Joseph's College here, he however said he was in a helpless position now, though he was the 'strongest' votary for bringing such a legislation, through which people could recall their representatives who had betrayed them.
"I can't move anything in the Parliament in this regard eventhough I am the strongest supporter of people getting power to recall their representatives when they fail to perform or commit the worst type of corruption cases like 'cash for query' or the recent human trafficking. Unfortunately the situation is such that I can't even speak my mind in the Parliament," he regretted.
The Speaker called for people's intervention to deal with corrupt members of the Parliament. The society should impose punishment on corrupt parliamentarians, he said.
"I Know you (people) are disgusted. But please don't reject the whole system of Parliamentary democracy. Parliament is a glorious institution formed by our founding fathers. Dr B R Ambedkar worked untiringly for 141 days to do this. My dream is that this great institution be rid of corruption," he said.
He said he wanted people to be more sensitive on what was happening inside the Parliament. The media too should not only project the 'black sheep', but also highlight the good things done by the parliament. Good deeds done in the parliament was not coming out, he stated.
