Rahul sits on 'dharna' to protest police lathicharge

Deoria, Apr 29 (UNI) Congress Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi today sat on a 'dharna' against police lathicharge, in which several Congress workers were wounded in Kotwali area of the district.

Taking out time from the Uttar Pradesh assembly poll meetings, Rahul reached the Kotwali police station to meet the locked up Congress workers.

Mr Gandhi said, ''the incident was shameful and should not have happened. The Congress workers did not do anything wrong and were taking the yatra in a democratic way. Therefore, I will complain to the Election Commission (EC) and demand action against the accused.'' Later, Mr Gandhi sat on a 'dharna' to demand registration of a case against the accused. However, he ended his protest after the officials assured lodging of a case and speedy action against the accused.

Several Congress workers, who were demonstrating in Kotwali area, were wounded yesterday after they were lathicharged by the police.

The demonstration was staged after the police booked the party workers for violating the model code of conduct, when they were taking out 'Rahul Sandesh Yatra' under the leadership of All India Youth Congress president Ashok Tanwar.

The police had arrested them, besides seizing their vehicles.
