NGOs have vital role in defending human rights

Bangalore, Apr 29 (UNI) Former National Human Rights Commission Chairman Justice M N Venkatachalaiah today said that the non-governmental organisations (NGO) had a vital role in defending the human rights and legal support should be extended for efficient functioning.

Speaking at the valedictory function of the Conference on the role of NGOs in support of NHRC here today he said that the Commission could set up a cell for a better coordination with NGOs in their effort to popularise the human rights movement in the country.

Stating that the NGOs should observe the moral code of conduct in approaching the cases of violation of human rights he said that the Commission should think of introducing an accreditation system for the NGOs for the cause they fight.

In turn the NGOs help in setting up of better norms in protecting and promoting the human rights, he said.

Human rights was the core of every society and without it no civilisation could survive, he said.
