Media Trust felicitates 100 journalists in Asom

Guwahati, Apr 29 (UNI) Altogether 100 journalists in the state were felicitated by the Media Trust at a book release function here today.

The book released by the Trust was 'History of Journalism in Assam'.

The felicitated journalists included local correspondents for various vernacular and national newspapers, cartoonists and other personnel associated with the press in various capacities in the states.

This is the second felicitation programme organised by the Media Trust, with the Trust felicitating 105 journalists in 1996 on the occasion of completion of 150 years of journalism in Asom that year.

Union Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Minister Santosh Mohan Dev, also present on the occasion, announced a grant of Rs 10 lakh for the archive section of the Trust.

The Media Trust has been collecting and working for the scientific preservation of old newspapers, magazines and other journals published from the state.

Executive trustee Prafulla Chandra Baruah urged those associated with the media as well as the general public to help the Trust in compiling the full records.

Mr Dev, lauding the efforts of the Trust, said the government would extend all possible help to it.

Underlining the fact that journalism in Asom was almost as old as that in the country, Mr Dev appealed to the media to highlight the developmental activities in the state as well as entire North East to thwart insurgency.

''When the developmental works will be highlighted, the youth will not be misguided by pleas of insurgent groups on the grounds that the government does not care for the people and the state was lagging behind,''he added.
