Father to receive late daughter's prizes at varsity convocation

Nagpur, Apr 29 (UNI) A proud father will receive the prizes won by his late daughter for topping an examination, at the 93rd convocation of the Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj (RTM) Nagpur University here tomorrow.

''Kirti Oberoi won twelve medals and prizes for topping the five-year bachelor of law (LLB) examination in summer 2005.

Unfortunately, she passed away due to brain stroke in Mumbai some time later,'' RTM Nagpur University vice chancellor Dr S N Pathan said. The prizes would, therefore, be accepted by Kirti's father, Amitabh Oberai at tomorrow's convocation, he said.

Dr Pathan said the university normally did not allow anybody to accept prizes on behalf of a student, but an exception was being made in Kirti's case at the request of her father.

''This will probably be the only instance in the country where the prizes won by a student will be accepted by a parent posthumously at the convocation of a university,'' the Vice Chancellor said.

Kirti won six gold medals, two silver medals and one cash prize for topping the LLB (five-year course) examination of 2005. In addition, she has won a gold medal each for scoring the highest marks in the subjects of Environmental Law, Law of Evidence and Civil Procedure Code, Dr Pathan said.

After passing her LLB Examination, Kirti was working for a law firm in Mumbai before the tragedy occurred, her father said. ''Kirti suddenly fell ill and had to be hospitalised. She remained in coma for nearly a week before breathing her last on January 29, 2006,'' Mr Oberoi, who is employed in a sharebroker's firm here, said.

Mr Oberoi, who also has a younger son named Dhruv, said his daughter wanted to pursue her masters in law in the United Kingdom (UK), and was enthusiastic after receiving an offer for admission from one of the universities there.
