Despite mega projects, Thane reeling under water shortage

Thane, Apr 29 (UNI) Thane district BJP has spearheaded an agitation demanding that water requirements of this water-starved district be met first before supplying to Mumbai from the Rs 3,000 crore Middle Vaitarna project that is coming up in Thane and is scheduled for completion by 2010.

Thane district BJP chief Chintaman Wanga and former Dahanu MP Om Prakash Sharma have spearheaded the agitation by tribals in the region.

Speaking to UNI, Mr Wanga rued that although Thane is one of the biggest districts in the state and has maximum number of dams, yet the people here are deprived of water.

Thane district supplies water to the whole of Mumbai, but the tribals in Mokhada and Sahapur are themselves deprived of water, Mr Wanga said.
