Agitators relent on demand for scrapping of power project
Udupi, Apr 29 (UNI) Agitators opposing a thermal power plant in this district today asked the state government to appoint a committee to study its impact following an appeal by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy's to give up the protest.
Nagarjuna Virodhi Horata Samiti member Vijay Kumar Hegde told newsmen here today that the people opposing the project had not made the protests a prestige issue as alleged by the chief Minister, but it was a question of survival of the people of the district due to adverse ecological effects." He said that the State government should appoint a committee comprising of experts from both government and non-governmental organisations to go into pros and cons of the project. It should also hold a public hearing for the project.
The Nagarjuna Power Company should also obtain all clearances legally before commencing the work on the project, he added.
