NGO slaps ultimatum on ULFA against violence

Guwahati, Apr 28 (UNI) Asom Public Works (APW), an anti-ULFA organisation, has said it will embark on a state-wide agitation if the outfit did not, stop atrocities and disclose the whereabouts of the persons it had kidnapped within seven days.

After staging a two-day sit-in protest at Dispur Last Gate here, an anti-ULFA organisation comprising family members of those who were either killed or kidnapped by the outfit, threatened to embark on a state-wide agitation if the ULFA failed to disclose the whereabouts of the persons it had kidnapped and tender a clarification for killing innocent civilians in the past two decades.

Nearly 200 families of about 12 districts of the state, who had bore the brunt of the ULFA atrocities participated in the demonstration.

APW Director Abhijeet Sarma said, ''The ULFA ought to explain the killing of hundreds of civilians in the last two decades. If it fails to do so within seven days, we have resolved to resort to an extensive statewide movement against the outfit.'' Over 12,000 people have lost their lives to insurgency in the past two decades.

The APW has also demanded the whereabouts of the victims abducted by the outfit till date.

Slamming the state government for 'not sympathising' with the bereaved families of the ULFA mayhem, the APW has also insisted that the government put pressure on Myanmar, Bangladesh and Bhutan for launching anti-insurgency operations against the ULFA in their territories.

'' The state government should take responsibility of the victims' families. The families should be rehabilitated and offered placements by the government,'' Mr Sarma said.

The APW warned if the government remained ''casual'' to the affected families, the activists of the organisation would resort to a fast-unto-death.

The organisation also vowed to wash out the ULFA's support in the state.
