Madurai West final electoral rolls on April 30

Chennai, Apr 28 (UNI) The final photo electoral rolls for the Madurai West Assembly constituency, where a bypoll is to be held, would be published on April 30, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister K Anbzhagan told the state Assembly today.

Moving the demand for grants for Public (Elections) department, he said the draft photo rolls in Madurai West, which fell vacant following the death of S.Ve.Shanmugham (AIADMK), were published on March 26 this year.

However, the draft and the final photo rolls for the remaining 233 Assembly constituencies would be published on May ten and May 25, respectively, he added.

A decision on holding bypoll to this constituency would be taken by the Election Commission of India (ECI), he added.

He said the ECI had announced the revision of electoral rolls with reference January 1, 2007 as the qualifying date.

Since the draft rolls to be published for the summary revision would be photo rolls, Mr Anbazhagan said the government had proposed to continue the special staff sanctioned for the preparation of electoral rolls beyond May 31 this year.

He also pointed out that the ECI had mandated that in the 2009 General Elections to the Lok Sabha, only photo rolls should be used.
