Insurgency problem can be sorted out through dialogue: Lyngdoh

Shillong, Apr 28 (UNI) Meghalaya's Minister in-charge of Higher and Technical Education Robert G Lyngdoh today said the insurgency problem in the NE states could be sorted out only through dialogue and not through military operations.

Confrontation and military operations against these groups would only propagate vicious circle of the insurgency problem, Mr Lyngdoh said while inaugurating a workshop on 'Peace initiatives' organised by the North East Social Research Centre.

Mr Lyngdoh said ceasefire with the insurgent groups is not the final solution to the problem without finding the root cause of the it.

''We treat a particular disease with proper diagnosis and the insurgency problem in the region,'' should also be trented likewise the Minister asserted.

Talking on peace, Mr Lyngdoh said the lack of peace is a symptom and not problem, adding that peace cannot be forced into someone as it comes from within an individual.

Mr Lyngdoh, who was regarded as the most successful Home Minister in Meghalaya, said he was successful in bringing peace during the peak of insurgency in the state mainly because of people's involvement in it.

He added that a large number of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) militants have surrendered mainly because he went ahead to convince the relatives of the militant cadres to urge their dear ones to shun the path of violence.
