Growing cynicism among people about politics, politicians: Jaitley

Ahmedabad, Apr 28 (UNI) Former Union Minister for Law, Justice and Company Affairs, Arun Jaitley, today said there is growing cynicism among people towards politics and politicians and this could hurt Parliament in the long run.

Speaking at a seminar 'Judicial activism: Whether in the interest of common man?' here, Mr Jaitley said a majority of people, in a TV poll said they wanted non-politicians in Parliament. This approach could affect Parliament, he said.

''We have tested our Constitution structure for almost 57 years. When the Constitution was created, we did not envisage how the future would be in a country so diverse in culture, food habits and people who all form one country together.

Yet, parliamentary system gave the people a point of view.

Looking back, we can say with satisfaction that the system has served us well. In contrast, Pakistan falters after 60 years though the people of the two nations were one before partition''.

''For the parliamentary system and democracy to succeed, three particular institutions are important. Even if one of them is affected or destroyed, democracy is lost. They are--professional armed forces that are non-political; independent judiciary and independent Election Commission which does not rig up elections.

''As we evolved, the delicate balance between executive and judiciary got disturbed. Therefore a healthy debate is needed to correct this imbalance,'' Mr Jaitley said.
