TN Speaker announces extension of budget session till May 14

Chennai, Apr 27 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker R Avudaippan today announced that the ongoing budget session would be extended till May 14.

A no confidence motion, given notice of by the opposition AIADMK, is likely to be taken up for debate on that day.

The decision to extend the session by a day was taken at the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting held in his chamber this noon at the suggestion of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to discuss and take a decision on the no confidence motion.

Deputy Leader of the opposition O Panneerselvam raised the issue soon after question hour and demanded that the no confidence motion given notice of by him on April 25, could be taken up for debtate after 14 days as per rule 68 of assembly rules.

Mr D Jayakumar (AIADMK) who had also moved the no confidence motion agianst the Speaker said as per article 171(c) of the constitution and rule 68 of assembly rules, the house should take it up for debate after 14 days.

Intervening, Mr Karunanidhi said the AIADMK leaders were insisting that the no confidence motion be taken after up 14 days as they wanted it to be taken up on May 11, coinciding with his Golden jubilee celebrations in the house.

He suggested that the BAC could meet and take a decision on the issue.
