TN files review petition with CWDT, seeking more water
New Delhi, Apr 27 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu government today filed a review petition with the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT), raising 13 objections and seeking about 60 TMC of water over and above the 419 TMC recommended by the tribunal and damages from Karnataka in case it failed to release the stipulated quantity of water.
In a voluminous petition, running to about 100 pages, filed by senior advocate Umapathy, the state government informed the tribunal that it would not be possible for Cauvery delta farmers to give up 'kuruvai' cultivation and switch to other crops such as cotton which required less water.
The tribunal in its February 5 order had recommended 270 TMC of water for Karnataka, 30 TMC for Kerala and seven TMC for Pondicherry.
The Tamil Nadu government contended in the petition that the farmers of the state were used to three crops of paddy for centuries and it would not be possible for them to give up one such crop.
