HC seeks explanation from trial court in Shahabuddin case

Patna, Apr 27 (UNI) Patna High Court today asked for an explanation from the Siwan special court as to why the trial of incarcerated RJD MP Shahabuddin was not completed within stipulated three month time frame.

The RJD MP was arrested on a case of vehicle theft.

A single bench of Justice Ghanshyam Prasad Singh passed an order during the hearing of the bail petition of Shahabuddin after his counsel informed the bench that the special court of Siwan could not complete the trial despite an earlier directive issued by the High Court in this connection.

Justice Prasad also directed the special court to inform the time period when the trial in connection with the case would be completed.

Counsel of the petitioner had urged the court to grant bail to the MP but prosecution vociferously opposed on the ground that he was also charged with cheating and forgery which attracts a maximum punishment of seven years.

Earlier during the hearing of the bail petition filed by the RJD MP in this regard, the HC had directed the special court of Siwan on January 16, 2007 to complete the trial within three months.

A case in this connection was lodged against Shahabuddin at Hussainaganj police station on April 24, 2005 following the recovery of one stolen jeep and a van besides three stolen motorcycles during raid conducted at his residence at Pratappur village.
