Delimitation delegation hears heated arguments

Dimapur, Apr 27 (UNI) A delegation of the Delimitation Commission of India, which is touring Nagaland for hearing on the implementation of Delimitation Act, 2002, from political parties and Tribal Hohos, witnessed some heated exchange of words between some Hoho leaders and Nagaland Commissioner T N Mannen.

According to official sources the Joint Action Committee(JAC) of Tribal Hohos on Delimitation yesterday alleged that Mannen prepared the draft proposals in a way that would suit his political ambitions. However, Mannen refuted the charge and pointed out that the forum was not to make allegations against anyone.

Sources said, ''Like the political parties, representatives of all tribes were divided on the proposed exercise. While a section demanded total implementation of delimitation, others were opposed to it and sought status quo. A number of representations, which were submitted to the three-member delegation designated by the Delimitation Commission of India, would be forwarded to the Commission in Delhi. After necessary study and review of the representations, the Commission would submit the final proposals to the state government.'' The opinion of the government on the proposal shall have to be submitted to the Commission latest by July 31.

The delegation was led by Dr M Sarangi, Deputy Election Commissioner, Delimitation-cum-OSD to the Chairman. Others cluded Mr Shangara Ram, Secretary, Delimitation Commission, and S K Mendiratta, Legal Advisor to the Commissioner. ''The delegation will leave for Delhi today'', sources said.
