CO2 laser surgery to aid Cancer patients

Kolkata, Apr 27 (UNI) Patients suffering from cancer in the city now have a modern "Head and Neck Cancer Surgery" using CO2 laser at an affordable price.

Stating this here today, AMRI Hospitals President Dr S B Purkayastha said, "AMRI is the first organisation in Eastern India who has started using the CO2 laser. Various types of laser rays are being used from long ago in the medical and industrial fields. After Nion laser, Excimer Laser etc, the CO2 laser is the new kind of laser rays which has been introduced in the medical field." He further said the equipment has been installed at an expenditure of Rs one crore.

However, the patiet's charges will vary moderately between Rs 4000 and Rs 6000.

AMRI Cancer Centre HOD surgical oncology Dr Gautam Mukhopadhyay said, "This ray has succeeded in making a new style in Oral Cancer treatment. This particular ray is the member of infrared rays family. The speciality of CO2 laser is that the ray can soak water.

In the cases of Nodule operation of vocal cord, precancerous of primary stage, this ray can be used successfully." "The operation is painless. As the operative area is 0.5 mm, the quantity of bleeding and tissue damage is very little thus a chance of infection is less. As a result of this, the patients are to stay in the hospital for a very short time," he added.

"Soon they can start their daily life and uses of post operative medicine are also less to ensure cost effective treatment. Not only that, after the head and Neck Surgery, the looks of the operated portion of the human body is not changed," he added.
